The Gray Areas: Cusps in Astrology

What makes a cusp?

A cusp is on the edge.

“Mathematics A point at which a curve crosses itself and at which the two tangents to the curve coincide.”¹

“A transitional point or time, as between two astrological signs [or houses as in a house cusp].”¹

A cusp is the overlapping area between one zodiac star sign and another. Every year the start and end day of a sign can change.  The day a sign starts is often as early as the 18th and ends as late as the 24th of one month to another depending upon the month.  I consider the area on or near the day to be the cusp; however, some astrologers would say the cusp is only the first or last day of a sign, not days near it.

The cusp effect

I believe a cusp has an effect; however, some astrologers believe a cusp has no effect.  Librarising.com is one such astrologer that says a cusp has no effect and rather it’s the Mercury, Venus, or some other planet that causes one to sense that.  Sound thought, for sure!

However I am not often into looking at things in a black and white way since there’s no room for anything else.  I see a lot of Grey all over the place.  Therefore, I don’t believe much in the you are either one way or another.  I believe human beings are far too complex and generally freedom seeking to be forced to stay put in a cubby hole; we like to spread!

Natives who are born on a cusp, often demonstrate strong traits of the sign on the cusp of their zodiac sign.

So say you are a Capricorn and the first day of Capricorn the year you were born was December 19th, you would also demonstrate qualities of a Sagittarius and be considered born on the cusp.  If you were born on January 20 (the last day of Capricorn that year) and January 21 was considered the first day of Aquarius, you would be a Capricorn on the Aquarius cusp displaying more Aquarius traits as Capricorn is almost phased out.  Having said that, your traits will still be distinctly Capricorn as suits your needs.

There will also be a dual masculine / feminine nature to the native’s self-identification.

Difficulty guessing sign

When I have a hard time guessing someone’s sun sign it’s either because of a powerful Ascendant, Moon or they are on the cusp and therefore exhibiting a confused presence.  And perhaps that’s a good thing, especially for the Scorpio cusps. ;)

I believe in cusps not only for the sun sign but for every luminary, planet sign and house in a chart.

So 0 degree Venus in Leo would actually have a Cancer-Leo love nature with behaviours and traits fluctuating and changing depending upon mood and circumstance.  Therefore a 29 degree Venus in Leo would be close in temperament to a Virgo, exhibiting both Leo AND Virgo qualities.  The degrees (which are determined based on the day the sign moved into the planetary influence) is the reason for out-of-sign planetary aspect contacts by orb.  And this is why a 2 degree Aries Sun will not trine (by orb) a 25 degree Leo Sun in synastry.  Another example: 27 degree Aries Sun and a 1 degree Gemini Sun actually become Sun Conjunct Sun even though it’s out-of-sign.

Choosing one sign over the other

Some Sun cuspies have made a decision to be one sign or the other and then play up that sign. As with anything, the more one affirms something, the more likely it is to become true.  And this is one way to better ourselves such as channeling another sign’s attributes.

[New Post] The Gray Area: Cusps in Astrology – http://blog.virgovault.com/?p=122

Unfortunately, I disagree. The Sun is either in one sign or the other. Many times the confusion arises because a 29 degree Leo Sun, for example, may have Mercury or Venus in Virgo. Sometimes it turns out that the person has Virgo rising, Virgo Moon, or even a highly aspected Mercury, or Mercury on an angle.

Disagreeing is a “fortunate” response, to me.
I say, “Disagreement is fuel for new thoughts.” © me. :)

It’s important to me that there are more sides than one, presented in an argument. Perhaps it’s my Jupiter Libra in the 9th Sextile my Sun in the 7th that wants that. :)

Anyway, your thought seems to be the prevailing thought.
Given what you say I think it’s even more cool to consider a “cusp” exists because while the sun sign can give us a lot, it doesn’t give enough. So we can consider the sign before and after to further our understanding of someone upon meeting if we don’t have an ephemeris to whip out. :)

William Lily* apparently thought that a sign on the cusp of a house could exhibit or connect to house next to it.

Which brings me to my theory of every sign contains aspects of the sign before and the sign after.
To me this is a “universal principle” of proximity.

      * Eric at Planetary Waves http://planetwaves.net/astrologynews/100713pwl.html wrote “The cusps are not firm lines, though they look like they are. As noted by William Lilly, a house cusp is sensitive for at least five degrees before the actual line.”)

Hope to get your feedback, for or against, on some other posts.
      Much love <3

Hi Abella – I’m a cusp girl, born when the Sun was just 0Tau25. I believed I was an Aries until I had my chart calculated when I was around 15. But then I have a stellium in Aries so that Aries energy is there in my chart – but my Sun is Taurus through and through.

I also tend towards the thought that the cusp is a defining line between one thing and another. If for example a planet is close to the cusp of a house, I don’t consider it as part of the next house. I
t is only in the house it is in, the same with signs. I have read a lot of thought otherwise and understand the concept
but it’s never worked for me in practice.

@36bd89140256f0046f7f46b984fd5833:disqus,  thanks for stopping by and commenting. :D

To me, experience trumps rules.  If your practical experience is that there’s no overlap, then definitely go with what works! :-) And yes, the Aries can come through due to the stellium but I get more Taurus or Venusian qualities with you.  I was shocked to find out you have an Aries stellium because I view you as refined, gentle, and co-operative.  :-) As well, there’s an artistic flair and a love of language and culture.  What gives?! :-)

However, when putting your stellium into house context, the Aries stellium suddenly isn’t as shocking.

I have Sun Leo 13, Venus Virgo 28; however, it could be said that I behave like a Venus Libra in love, beauty, money, friendship, values just as much as I do Virgo.  :D

      Example:
      Venus Virgo</a ~ Venus Libra

There’s overlap in the description and then clear differences. Even with the clear differences, it still seems to apply.

      * I love a calm pleasing home environment (actually, any environment).  Beautiful flowers, soothing music, luxurious and tactile fabrics, balanced patterns and colours.
      * I’m highly ethical, truthful (critical), and helpful.
      * Creating a harmonious, atmospheric, and comfortable love-shack is important to me.  Mood lighting, fabrics, candles, scents, etc.
      * I avoid swearing and if I do, it’s often just for dramatic effect. Maybe that’s my Leo coming out? :-)
      * I tend to be a people-pleaser.  I like getting everyone talking at a party, getting along, and handing out unusual drinks.
      * I love writing and language, smart people, with good manners.
      * I avoided loud, brash, arrogant, me, me, me or Aries-type lovers — brutes!… :-)
      * I enjoy refined people, who are charming.
      * I can blow things out of proportion and analyze something like crazy.
      * I like clean lovers who are punctual (I’ll wait awhile for them but I don’t like anyone to wait on my partner or myself) and well-groomed.
      * It’s important to me that my partner gets his needs met.
      * Fashion? Oh yes! Practical, classy and sometimes quirky.  A combination is heaven.  For example Tilley’s Endurables, to me, is stylish AND practical but unfortunately not too quirky. :D   But that’s where I can accessorize to add some pizazz.
      * I’m not detached at all in love and friendship.  I’m openly warm hearted, playful, and affectionate in a subdued manner but yes, I can turn cool and analytical when the time comes.
      * I like to help people but I definitely want it to be a two-way street: give and take.
      * I am private and a bit of a loner yet at the same time enjoy mingling with people at a get together… having a good chat while enjoying the finer things in life such as good food (but as healthy as possible), wine, music, theatre…
      * Partnerships are very important to me in love, work, and life.  I like win-win.  Work together, do together, be together.
      * I’m a tweaker.  I’ll tweak, tweak, tweak you until you beg for me to stop. :P Then I’ll expect you do your own tweaking… lol
      * Fairness and a balanced perspective is really important to me.  An argument contains two sides to the story, buy-in is ultra important to me.  You don’t agree? We don’t do it and it’s time to negotiate!

To me, some of this seems Leo, Virgo, and Libra.  I have a 3 planet Virgo stellium (23 to 27 degrees) in the 8th and the lone Mercury Virgo 8 which is far away from the 7th (this is in Placidus or Koch).

I have Jupiter Libra 28 and Uranus Libra 5 and Sun and Mars Leo in the
7th house on the cusp of Cancer. I have Mercury Virgo 8 and Venus in the
8th.  Venus, Mercury, and Neptune are well-aspected / harmonious… Do you think that has anything to do with being Venusian in love as well as Mercurial? Thoughts?

And when I was playing with AstroDyne I had, in order of powerfulness by sign:  Virgo, Scorpio, Leo and Venus, Saturn, Pluto by planet.  *shrugs*….

How can we tell for sure? How can we draw firm lines? And does it really matter? Will accuracy decrease if we overlap? Would we likely find something else in the chart that suggests the same thing? And don’t things like house cusps and rulers affect everything too?  *mon dieu*! :D

As usual, I didn’t expect this to be so long — blame Mercury Septile Jupiter. ;P

    • http://www.leahwhitehorse.com Lua Astrology

Lol – Mercury Septile Jupiter…Right now I have Jupiter conjunct my natal Mercury. You should see the amount of correspondence I’ve got coming in and the amount of writing I’ve got flowing out of me haha.

House/sign placement is modified by the aspects for sure. This is where the wonderful weaving begins. Whilst I may be ‘fixed’ (astrologically too) in my definition of cusps, I am fluid in interpretation and blending of energies.
You asked about the Venus-Mercury-Neptune stellium. To me that would mean that once one energy is tapped into the others automatically respond – like the sound of a harp resonating with a glass. I also tend to think that when we love someone and they love us, then every planet plays a part.
As for me – well, I am very Taurean in some ways such as being creativity, singing etc. I need my home comforts, soft fabrics and love love love (but then Venus is conjunct my MC). However Aries comes out in my impatience (more with myself than others), my strong desire to work alone and to forge my own path. I can also be quite competative but in a productive way rather than to beat someone else. Having Venus and Mars in mutual recepetion as the dispositors of my chart it is a subtle blending of influence.

      Hello Leo-Virgo cusper!!
I’m a Leo Sun, Virgo Moon, Virgo Mercury, and Cappy Rising. :D
I’m not on the cusp but I have a Virgo stellium.  Sometimes I’m a lot more Virgo than Leo.  Rather be Leo though — more fun!! :D

So are you are feeling the Leo with the Leo Moon or the Virgo Mercury? Now your turn to say something... ;)
